Backlink

A backlink, or incoming/inbound link, is a hyperlink on a given web page that redirects to another domain.

To boost search engine optimization, a website will try to place as many backlinks as possible pointing to itself on other external sites. These links, on other sites, work as references and influence popularity levels that search engines assign.

A page with quality reference links (quality meaning coming from a popular domain, and relevant to the page content) should, in theory, have a better ranking.
